In The Book

Those of you who know me well are acquainted with the fact that one of my favorite authors is Diana Gabaldon.  Her book Outlander I have read...oh...maybe...ten times. Her other books in the Outlander series (there are currently six plus a Companion guide) I've read somewhat fewer times...I'm doing the second reading of her latest Breath of Snow and Ashes right now.

I enjoy her writing because the books are about my favorite subjects, namely Scotland, North Carolina, history, medicine and romance. The number FIVE book in the series is called The Firey Cross, and when I read it before, I had no idea where Granite Falls was in North Carolina, but assumed by the writing that it was a small town in the mountains.  This time when I read it, I was so excited to see her mention Granite Falls a number of times (I counted six times before I stopped counting), that I read excerpts to my husband...who, by the way,  has also read all six books.

 The Falls themselves have apparently always been known as Granite Falls, however, the town did not become Granite Falls until 1899. Since Ms Gabaldon's reference to Granite Falls takes place in 1771, I wonder if she knew this or if she was referring to the area, which I think was known as Lovelady at the time.

 Oh, well, no matter, Diana...the fact that the town is in there is fine by me.  We are only two counties away from Rowen County where the book takes place, but the setting sounds very much like Caldwell County (where Granite Falls is located).  If this is an error, and I think it was probably just an oversight, it is the first historical faux pas  I've seen in any of her books.  In fact, a history professor in Maryland, that I am acquainted with, made the statement that her "books are the most historically accurate fiction" he had ever read.

At any rate, Diana, I am going to continue to read about Clare and Jamie. I can't wait for book number seven, which apparently takes place during the revolutionary war.  I am still wearing my "Clare's ring," and still hope that someday, you will stay at Thistle House Bed & Breakfast as our guest. (Please bring an autographed photo so that we can add you to our "wall of fame.")

Ceud Mile' Failte'
"One hundred thousand welcomes"

 'Ceud Mile' Failte' translates to "One Hundred Thousand Welcomes," and that’s what you’ll get when you stay at Thistle House Bed & Breakfast – and Wedding Place.
>From our peaceful, scenic setting in historic Granite Falls, nestled in the foothills of North Carolina’s famous Blue Ridge Mountains, to each of our beautifully appointed theme rooms, Thistle House is the embodiment of old-fashioned care and up-to-date accommodation.
All BandBs are not created equal, and if we do say so (although we mostly let our delighted guests speak for us, as you'll notice throughout our web site!), we pride ourselves on being a cut above.
Please don't take someone else's word for it, though - see for yourself. If you have never experienced the kind of stay that we’ve crafted into a uniquely enjoyable and memorable guest experience, you owe it to yourself to visit this outstanding North Carolina Bed and Breakfast.
Find out for yourself why our guests rave about our distinctive atmosphere and signature touches, like our famous breakfasts, and authentic and atmospheric artwork supplied by local talent like artist Wendy Griffith.
In truth, any photographs and even accolades you’ll see exhibited on our web site fall short of the in-person experience, where you’ll get far more than just a flavor of the attention and detail that awaits each of our guests.
No greater compliment can, we feel, be granted than the ones we get from so many  happy couples who have chosen our North Carolina bed and breakfast for – not simply a happy and eventful stay as guests – but as the place to get married and usher in their new lives. We leave no detail overlooked – even to the clergy, who carry our full faith and confidence.
 We constantly work to improve and enhance the guest experience, which is why we became known, after our first year, as The Wedding Place!
Each of our theme rooms speaks to a level of thought and care that is far beyond the scope of cookie-cutter motels, a magical and restful experience that guests come to cherish, and eagerly return to:
•        The House of Burnett Room, our largest and most elegant, a favorite for brides and honeymoon couples;
•        The Bell of the Borders Room, which evokes the luxurious elegance  of bygone days;
•        The Robert Burns Room, which blends casual with elegant, in rich colors and historic memorabilia;
•        The popular and newly refurbished St. Andrews Room, which imbues the bedroom with the feel of a cozy, restorative garden sanctuary, and offers our most luxurious (two-room!) bathroom.
For a taste of Scotland that’s sure to instill a craving for more, our Bed and Breakfast is a delightful, delicious, de-lovely experience that combines the ease and feel of home with the romance and relaxation of an Inn.
Come to North Carolina and indulge yourself, or rather – let us at the Thistle Bed and Breakfast inn indulge you. Whether traveling solo or with your soul mate, treat yourself by letting us treat you. Life is short. Pleasures to treasure are few. Indulge – let yourself be transported to a time of gracious living and accommodation, of romance and relaxation. That’s what we’re here for.
Make yourself at home on our web site, and when you have the urge, simply book yourself (or yourselves, as the case may be!) a room at rates that you can lock in prior to year-end.
Whatever you read and see, it’s even better in person. Especially the food, like our amazing breakfasts, which some have told us are so addictive that guests should be warned of the habit-forming tendencies.
Book your reservations by clicking on the purple button above, on the Policies and Discount page, or at the top of the rooms and reservations page,

Note: Please mention if you are Military; we prize and honor your vital role and sacrifices.
