On Turning 65
My birthday, April 24, found me in the outpatient department hooked up to a transfusion of whole blood to boost my ever lowering
red cell count, a by-product of chemotherapy. I had qualified for Medicare on the first of the month, and already collecting
Social Security, I felt a certain freedom in being 65. Looking forward to a nice quiet family celebration, while suffering
with the first cold I had in about 5 years, I looked up from my sewing to witness the entrance of my friends, Mary and David
from Michigan. Mary and I have been friends since the 5th grade and celebrated our birthdays together on several occasions.
(Hers is May 2nd.) And celebrate we did. With a wonderfully decorated cake with pink ribbons and thistles by PATTY'S CAKES
and a trip to the Festival of Flowers at the Biltmore Estate.
But my family was not done. A few days later, my grandchildren,
John Jr, Mickal, Megan and Amber came from Pennsylvania and Statesville, NC to surprise me. My "inherited" grandson
Shawn Absher and his family came down from Wilkes, and my friends Lee and Debbie came up from Gastonia. We had another birthday
cake by PATTY'S CAKES, this one with thistles and the entire Thistle House living and dining rooms were covered with balloons.
A couple days later my Aunt Jean Storm-Scott stayed one evening. It was a great time and good to see her again.
Karen
said that this was the first time since the B&B opened that she prayed that we wouldn't have guests so they wouldn't
have to end up sleeping on the floor!
Thank you, family, for making my week long celebration so perfect.

- SMOKING POLICY: For the comfort of our guests, smoking is not permitted in the house, but you are
welcome to smoke outside.
CHILDREN: Our establishment is not suitable for children under the age of 10. Parents are responsible
for any breakage or damage caused by their children. - PETS: While we
have no facilities for pets, we can arrange for boarding. Also, we hope you will enjoy our AKC Registered Sheltie, Lady Bell
Burnett.
HANDICAPPED: At the present time, we are
not handicapped accessible, as our rooms are on the second floor. However, we have plans to make these
improvements in the near future, so feel free to check back at that time.
